上堡，绥宁县西部一个村子，可它却有国名。因为明正统元年至天顺四年（1436），蒙能、李天保等人领导湘、黔、桂边界的苗民发动大规模的武装起义。此次起义规模之大、持续时间之久，前所未有。共有3省18县5万人参与，历时24年，并且以上堡为中心首次建立苗民政权，与明王朝分庭抗礼。领导人李天保将年号定为“武烈”，自封“武烈王”，并将苗疆划为省、府、州、县等行政单位。至今，黄桑坪一带的小孩子还会哼唱一首歌谣：“界溪省，巴流府，雪林州，赤板县，上堡有个金銮殿”。
村子被青石古道隔成一个个“井”字，远远望去就像一个棋盘。“棋盘”坐落在9座小山的包围中，形成一把巨椅。当地村民把这样的气象叫“神龟出山”，“神龟带九子，九子九成精”，代表祥和。
8月初，记者来到这里寻访，在村口的一片菜土里，看到了当年起义的旗杆石仍在。那是两块一米来高的青石柱，上部凿有圆孔，用一根木栓与旗杆上的圆孔相连。一旦升旗，先将旗杆放倒，套上旗帜，只要拉动上面的绳索，旗帜自然迎风飘扬。
记者顺着青石板路，来到村子的后头，寻觅当年的“金銮殿”。该殿建在村庄的西北角，也是全村的最高处。只可惜眼中的青石片块垒成的院墙上只挂有一块“金銮殿”的牌匾，昔日的大殿、龙椅，还有威严、豪华都随着历史的烟云散去，甚至连宫殿的旧址上也建起了吊脚苗寨，住的是寻常人家，随着游人的增多，这里已变成了农家乐。不过，在村民的指点下，记者还是找到了故物，那就是铺地的青石块。这些石块约一米见方，厚约半尺，石板上雕有精美的花纹，可以想象当时“金銮殿”的华丽气派。整个院子虽然比不上北京故宫的排场，可就地面来说质量绝不弱于前者。
记者在这里见到了年近六旬的杨芳柏。他说，他家祖辈从城步县城迁来，至他是第五代，“金銮殿”是什么样子，他也没有见过。不过，他见过宫墙，有两米多高，一米多宽，都是青砖、青石板堆垒起来的。围墙总长度约一里半，上有三座门楼。正门楼两旁还供有土地菩萨，这是当地的风俗，对土地菩萨十分敬仰。新中国成立初剿匪时，这院子还做过剿匪指挥部。他还记得，刘排长在正门楼处架了一挺机枪。剿匪结束，“金銮殿”2000平方米的地基都分给村民建了民房。
在一户人家门口，有一棵不生枝叶的老树，树牌上书“拴马树”。据说当年起义苗民在此拴马，以至于树干上留下一道深深的勒痕。李天保等人起义后被朝廷出重兵镇压。为了纪念镇压的官兵，朝廷在这里修建了一座忠勇祠，但由于无人管理，当地苗民更不会主动修缮，忠勇祠倒塌后再未重建。如今，只剩刻着“忠勇祠”三字的石碑孤独矗立，其后长满茂密的植物。村子背后，有两座小山似的土包，和其他山体并不相连，上面也没有多少树木，当地人猜测，这有可能是李天保的埋葬之地。
历史一页页翻过，那场起义已过去近600年，上堡古国如今变成了一个苗族特征鲜明的寨子，但是作为当年一个政权中心，独特的供排水系统、道路交通、防御设施仍有着当年的烙印。
发源于上堡村后山龙潭的小溪，随着山势流入村中，沿沟渠流入院落。在每家每户门前，都有半人高的院墙，全部由片状石头垒起，不需泥土黏附，却异常坚固，整个村子俨然一座坚固的石头城，这显然也与当年的防御工事相关。各户之间，均有青石板道路相通，同样是便于战时传递消息、相互支援。时至今日，上堡村的房屋因战火毁坏已几经重建，但仍完整保留最初的整体规划。
上堡村如今居住着苗、侗、黎、瑶四个民族的村民400余人，基本上是当年起义军的后人。虽不是一个传统的大家族，却也其乐融融。民族平等政策的实施，使得这一带人民安居乐业。
