11月上旬，在洪江古商城里仁巷8号，记者见到了做草龙的唐春。
像手工扎成的纸龙、布龙、板龙一样，草龙也是舞的。唐春扎出的草龙不仅可以舞，而且颇具观赏价值。
稻草扎成，却是群龙之首
唐春告诉记者，传统的草龙制作很简单，将一束束稻草用草绳捆住两头，做成一节节的龙身。然后，再用草绳将一节节龙身接起来。至于龙头，则用稻草束做底子，然后上面糊些彩色的纸；龙眼不是用瓶子盖就是用鸡蛋壳镶嵌；龙嘴也是捆两把稻草，再用木棍间隔一下。龙尾同样是一束稻草，只不过捆成尖状罢了。无疑，就地取材、因陋就简的制作方法，整个过程是扎龙草成，草草玩玩，玩是草根，草草收场。
今年30岁的唐春，10多岁就玩草龙。他看到一个奇怪的现象，平日舞龙，不管是漂亮、威武的布龙，还是亮堂、雄壮的纸龙，一旦遇到草龙，就得低调让步。一问，才知道，相传草龙起源于隋唐，盛行于明清。起初，农民在每年秋收之后，用稻草扎成5至21节的草把，用木棍擢住，草绳串起，编扎成草把龙舞耍。他还得知，草龙是龙中正统，群龙之首，人称真龙、老龙。为什么？得到回答是，在中国传统文化中，民以食为天，万物谷当首；而在中国农耕文化中，稻、黍、稷、麦、菽，“五谷”之中稻为先。作为一种欢庆丰收、感恩天地、祈求再好的活动形式，舞草龙自然排在“龙”事第一的位置。
草龙制作，发展成工艺
唐春的作为，就是将草龙制作变成了一种工艺。不然，为什么省工艺美术家协会吸收他为会员，为什么草龙制作成为怀化市“非遗”项目？
领略了中国龙文化博大精深，唐春觉得草龙简陋的外形实在与其地位不相称，决心制作出精美、威武的草龙来。
首先，他将“捆稻草”改为“结辫子”，即制作草龙之前，先把稻草结成草辫。
其次，他在龙头上做文章。既然草龙为正，就要有正龙的华贵、威武。他突出龙眼的神韵，用金箔纸包龙眼——金光四射，傲视天地；突出龙腮的动感，用铁树枝镶嵌，尖而硬，刺向后颈，有如人发怒时的胡须倒竖；突出龙嘴的宽阔，呈吞云吐雾、包藏宇宙之势。这三个元素的调动，龙头威武俨然。
再次，在龙尾上做文章，将其做得张扬上翘，姿态若飞。
记者看到唐春挂在堂屋里的龙头，哪一个都是精气神饱满，凸现昂扬向上之态。
七十二行都不靠，自认是扎匠
唐春说，草龙制作过去没有留下什么章法，七十二行中也不晓得属哪一行。
现在既然成了一种工艺，他给自己定了章法：首先是收草。在稻子收获时就得进行，稻草不能淋雨，更不能堆沤。接下来就是“结辫”，开初也有人建议搓绳，可因为纯粹手工，搓绳伤手。第三步扎竹架。竹子必须是一年以上的南竹，嫩了无力，老了易断，以弹性好为标准。根据龙头、龙身、龙尾的形状，扎成一个个竹胚子。第四步包竹架，即将草辫扎在竹架上。第五步是拼龙，即用麻绳将龙头、龙身、龙尾连接在一起。
这样扎出的草龙，舞起来伸缩自如，煞是好看。
唐春说，如此说来，他应该属于扎匠，祖师是唐代画家吴道子。画家与扎匠，相通的大概都是创造了美化生活的作品吧！
