大唐“岳州扇业”老总唐立新说，岳州扇就有这种魅力，谁沾上它，这个情结一辈子也解不开。
他的师傅李忠友就是一个。李忠友的人生在重振岳州扇的拼搏中悲壮谢幕，生命的最后光辉闪烁在制扇车间。
李忠友是名副其实的中国扇王。
他自幼就吃制扇这碗饭，学得、也创得一身绝技。拉“鼠眼”、剖“合青”篾、“油炸骨扇”等，样样熟稔。
拉“鼠眼”，除了他的师弟彭明华等少数几个人外，其他的都不如。剖“合青”篾，现在随着他的离世而失传。“油炸骨扇”，即将竹子龙骨先用滚菜籽油炸炸得焦黄的，既美观，也可以防虫防腐，至今就没几家掌握。
唐立新告诉记者，在上个世纪，其他扇厂也依样画葫芦，看起来也炸得像模像样，可一遇到天热，油就渗出来了——收油技术不过关。而只要李忠友稍加指点，问题就迎刃而解。
可李忠友又不仅仅是个靠绝技吃饭的人，而是岳州扇创牌者。是他，1958年带头办起了岳州扇厂。是他，采取“请进来、走出来”的办法，集各家所长，让岳州扇后来居上，成为全国三大名扇的头块品牌。纸扇自不用说，还有什么绢扇、骨扇、宫扇、帽扇、套扇、羽毛扇、轻便扇、香木扇、戏剧舞蹈扇等，都在他手里开发出来。他将岳州扇厂办得如日中天。上个世纪七八十年代，原岳阳地区尚没有外事机构，可岳州扇厂的外事办却有20多人。岳阳伢妹子参加工作，政法、银行系统不是首选，而是岳州扇厂。
在上个世纪的中国制扇界，哪个不知李忠友？
上个世纪80年代末，全国制扇界竞争激烈，手段百出，有的仿制名牌，有的在制扇中大量引入机械加工元素，坚持纯手工操作的岳州扇厂显得不适，逐渐走向衰退。至1997年，岳州扇厂完全停止生产。
许多人离开了工厂，凭着掌握的制扇手艺外出独闯天下。已退休的李忠友好不痛心，年近八旬的他，义无反顾地为重振岳州扇事业四处奔走呼号。
他拄着拐杖来到自己徒弟唐立新家里，要他出山，组织岳州扇生产。话已说明，也不再重复，只是每天都来，一坐就是一天，就希望徒弟口里蹦出个“好”字来。可已在外贸生意里如鱼得水的唐立新实在不想重操旧业，现实太残酷了：岳州扇人李江丰因重办扇厂倒闭服毒身亡；钟莲英债台高筑无力偿还，只得浪迹他乡；李海丰扇厂倒闭负债累累，终日以泪洗面；郭光山因操劳过度引发脑溢血，只得终日含恨在床……
但那双希冀的眼睛、那端坐不动的神态告诉他，不出山，师傅是不会结束这种“请愿”行动的。
他答应了。2008年4月，岳州扇厂重新挂牌，师傅跟着徒弟上班了。
如果说，上个世纪，30多岁时妻子离世后，他不再续弦，把工厂当家，把岳州扇作情人的话，那么这个时候，他拒绝了孩子们的孝心，也放弃了天伦之乐，而是把工厂当家，一腔痴情追求岳州扇再兴。他胃不好，也和工友们在厂里食堂吃饭；回家路远，就在厂里搭铺睡觉。
唐立新主外，跑市场、跑资金，厂里自有李忠友等一帮弟兄主持生产、创作。厂里慢慢地有了起色，产品畅销。热闹的时候，一个国家总统选举两派候选人的“广告扇”同时在这里制作。唐立新现在回忆起都觉得有味，他在那个国家订了150万把总统选举广告扇，到他检查产品时，竟发现另一方候选人的头像也上了扇子。是否错了，而且错得一塌糊涂？问原因，原来是竞选双方都在厂里订了150万把扇子。
这一年，李忠友过得很开心。
可终究是80多岁的老人，他病倒了。
