湘中古镇杨家滩有一个古老的建筑群，曾经辉耀一方，至今虽经岁月沧桑，受到了不同程度的破坏，仍然魅力犹存。

来到始建于同治和光绪年间保存尚为完好的一栋青砖花瓦的古老宅院——老刘家。老刘家是杨家滩刘氏的祖居之地，始建于康熙四十七年。刘家大院房屋很多，因为采用院落建筑，据说天井就有108个，有人历数过，在迷宫中行走，你也分不出哪是里弄，哪是胡同，更不用说青石所砌成的大大小小的长方形、正方形天井的数目
有人称老刘家有“四多”，即住房多，天井多，门槛多、拐弯多，外人入内容易迷失方向，真可谓“进门容易出门难”。这是一处奇特而幽深的古代民宅，至今还有数十户三百多人居住，原貌虽已残缺不全，但四十八个天井至今尚存，成为人们津津乐道的美谈。
云桂堂，为当地土财主彭胜安始建于同治年间的四进院落，是保存较为完整的花瓦屋。在平坦的梅林田垄上，彭家大院气势恢宏。正面是广阔的田野，门前一块大坪，长约180米的青砖城门至今犹存。走进正门，又是一块大坪，长达40米，宽约10米的近400平方米的正屋大厅非常壮观，显示了彭家大屋的气派！两边分别为第一横是厢房，第二横是耳房，第三横是杂房。这些建筑除了稍有破旧外，基本还保存着原貌。
有＂湘军之母＂之称的罗泽南在杨家滩创立「汲古书屋」、传播知识。湘军半数统帅曾在这里求学。汲古书屋又有＂湘军军校＂之称。
