曾应明一行实地参观了周家大院的四大院落，对周家大院深厚的文化底蕴、风格独特的建筑、规模宏大的院落，大为赞赏。曾应明表示，从这些残存的房屋及结构中，仍可见其当年的豪华程度和精美的工艺，其规模和历史文化底蕴远胜于有“天下第一村”之称的张谷英村，只是养在深闺人未识，要做好周家大院这篇大文章，必须要做好规划和项目申报，加大投入并做好宣传。
据悉，永州市共有三个村入围“湖南最美村落”，分别是：江永的上甘棠村、江华的宝镜村以及零陵的周家大院。周家大院古院落群体，由六座院子组成，每个院落都有自己的建筑特色和传奇故事，从官宦、商贾、地主到平民百姓，它是从明朝中期到民国初期近700年的湘南地区社会的缩影、时代的 写照和民俗风情的展现。
